03-01_2008: Valley Transportation Plan 2035 Final Open House!

Valley Transportation Plan 2035 Final Open House!

Release Number:   03-01_2008
Release Date:   March 3, 2008

San Jose, Calif.-As part of the process to update its 25-year long-range Valley Transportation Plan (VTP), the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will be holding its final Open House in San Jose  this week to seek community input.

VTA is also providing a public survey online.   To participate, log onto www.vta.org and look for the VTP 2035 banner on the homepage for details.  The current VTP 2035 & Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) 2035 Timeline is also available.

Under VTP 2035 development process, cities, towns and the County of Santa Clara  submit projects to VTA for inclusion in the plan.  VTA places projects in two groups; those that can be funded with the expected revenues over the life of the plan, known as financially constrained, and those which must wait for additional, yet to be obtained funds, known as financially un-constrained.

The VTP also organizes potential projects into ten categories: Transit, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Highways, Expressways, Local Streets & Roads, Bicycles, Community Design & Transportation, Soundwalls, Pavement Management, and Graffiti Removal & Landscape Restoration.   VTP 2035 also introduces three new program areas: Freeway Maintenance, Lifeline Transportation and Non-Measure A Transit.

The final VTP 2035 Open House will be held at the following location:

San Jose
Wednesday, March 5, 2008 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm

Those unable to attend this meeting may make written comments by email tovtp2035@vta.org or send them to VTA Community Outreach Department, 3331 North First Street, Bldg. B, San Jose, CA 95134 or by telephone 1(800)894-9908, TDD only (408)321-2330.  The deadline for public input is March 31, 2008.

Over the next month, VTA will prepare draft project lists to be submitted to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) for consideration in the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). These lists will be subject to revisions as discussions continue at the county and regional levels over the next several months.

Background of VTP

VTA periodically updates its 25-year long-range Transportation Plan (VTP). The last plan, VTP 2030, was adopted by the VTA Board of Directors in February 2005. The update for the VTP is underway and generally tracks in advance of the RTP update which is undertaken by the MTC.

VTA’s effort is an ongoing process that is expected to continue through 2008 the end of the year. At the end of this process, VTA's Board of Directors will adopt the Valley Transportation Plan 2035 which will articulate a countywide vision for transportation, support the regional vision for transportation in the Bay Area, and outline transportation planning, projects and programs for Santa Clara County.
