nr03-06: Bus Bridging to Occur at VTA Platform Retrofit Construction Projects

Bus Bridging to Occur at VTA Platform Retrofit Construction Projects

Release Number:   nr03-06
Release Date:   March 25, 2008

San Jose, Calif. – To increase customer confidence while also adding additional safety measures, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will utilize bus bridge service for the remainder of the current phase of platform retrofit construction, which is planned for completion April 2008.

Northbound passengers wishing to board or de-board at Tamien station will need to utilize the bus bridge service on weekdays and weekends.   This bus bridge service will operate between Curtner and the Convention Center stations.  Users of Tamien station are urged to call VTA Customer Service at (408) 321-2300 for personalized trip planning services.

The platform retrofit project eases the boarding and exiting of light rail vehicles by raising station platforms and eliminating the eight inch difference between platform and vehicle.   The current need to step up into a vehicle limits access for mobility impaired individuals and requires them to utilize a lift or ramp to board the train.  Once a station is retrofitted, level boarding will be available at each doorway of every light rail vehicle.  The retrofit project includes 13 light rail stations: Children’s Discovery Museum, Virginia, Tamien, Curtner, Capitol, Branham, Ohlone/Chynoweth, Oakridge, Almaden, Blossom Hill, Snell, Cottle and Santa Teresa.  Work on these stations will progress in a north to south direction and is scheduled to be completed in March 2009.  These are the final stations within VTA’s 42-mile light rail system requiring retrofitting.

A tentative schedule of station construction and closures is posted on VTA’s website, in the “projects” section. Information on substitute bus service during construction can be obtained by calling VTA Customer Service at (408) 321-2300; TDD only, (408) 321-2330.
