Weekend Work to Close Some Light Rail Stations Transit Mall and Japantown/Ayer Stations Affected
| Release Number: | nr04-10 |
| Release Date: | April 25, 2008 |
San Jose, CA—Continuous construction activities will be taking place this weekend in downtown San Jose, according to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), while curved track at the intersection of Second and San Carlos Streets is replaced.
Westbound San Carlos, between Second and First streets will be closed, with traffic and buses detoured one block south to San Salvador. The construction work will also require the shutdown of light rail service along parts of First and Second streets in the downtown area. Substitute bus service, known as a “light rail bus bridge” will transport riders between Convention Center and Civic Center stations and will stop at each of the affected stations: San Antonio, Santa Clara, St. James and Japantown/Ayer.
VTA is adding extra service for Sharks fans coming downtown for Sunday’s playoff game. Ridership patterns show most Sharks fans using VTA Light Rail are coming from either the Campbell or Santa Teresa lines, and the construction will have no impact on these riders. These fans can continue to ride light rail as they normally would.
Sharks fans coming from the north on light rail, however, will need to exit trains at Civic Center Station and board special buses that will take them to the San Fernando Light Rail Station near the Shark Tank. A similar bus ride from the San Fernando Station to Civic Center Station will be available after the game.
Similar track work will take place the weekend of May 17 at the intersection of Second and Devine and will also result in light rail stations closures in the downtown San Jose area. Once the worn track at these two locations is replaced, the amount of noise generated by light rail trains negotiating these two curves should be significantly reduced.
A tentative schedule of construction and closures is posted on VTA’s website, www.vta.org, in the “projects” section.
