VTAs Security Program Receives State, Homeland Security & Federal Recognition
| Release Number: | NR 05-03 |
| Release Date: | May 9, 2008 |
San Jose, Calif. – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is slated to receive $3,289,948 in funds from the State of California Homeland Security (OHS). VTA was provided a Conditional Notification of Project Award under the California Transit Security Grant Program, from Proposition 1B. The money is earmarked for VTA security projects.
Funds are allocated to each eligible transit system based on a formula that considers population and revenue. The State of California has appropriated $60 million of the Proposition 1B funds to the FY 07-08 California Transit Security Grant Program. The funds will be used to purchase and install high security fencing at the Cerone Operating Division, CCTV video on demand and laser intrusion detection systems and emergency security telephones at light rail platforms and transit centers.
The Highway Safety, Traffic Reduction, Air Quality and Port Security Bond Act of 2006, approved by the voters as Proposition 1B at the November 7, 2006 general election, authorizes the issuance of nearly $20 billion dollars in general obligation bonds for specified purposes, including grants for transit system safety, security and disaster response projects.
VTA was also recognized for its outstanding security program by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) last month. Based on a review of VTA’s Security Program, TSA named VTA among the industry’s best for its approach and improvement in security program development, planning and execution. VTA is one of five transportation agencies nationwide to receive the superior performance recognition.
