VTA Supports the Camino Arroyo Bridge Project
| Release Number: | nr05-08 |
| Release Date: | May 20, 2008 |
San Jose, Calif. – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is joining the City of Gilroy in the ground breaking ceremony for the Camino Arroyo Bridge on Wednesday May 21, 2008. The construction project provides a critical north-south local road connection within Gilroy east of US 101.
Both VTA and the City of Gilroy are funding the construction of the bridge, which includes two travel lanes and bike lanes in each direction and sidewalks on both sides. VTA is contributing $6.725 million dollars for the Camino Arroyo Bridge Project; which has a total cost of $11.4 million.
The Camino Arroyo Bridge Project is expected to significantly improve local and regional circulation by connecting the Pacheco Pass Plaza commercial center with the Gilroy Premium Outlets; allowing for reduced traffic congestion at the US 101 Interchange with SR 152 and Leavesley Road. In addition, bike lanes, bike trails, sidewalks, new lighting, a traffic signal and two new transit stops will make the area safer for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The construction effort will encourage non-motorized transportation while also helping Gilroy residents and visitors reduce their carbon footprint.
The five-lane bridge is planned to be open to traffic in November 2008, with final construction completion slated for spring of 2009. The ground breaking ceremony for the Camino Arroyo Bridge takes place at 9:30 a.m. and will be held on Camino Arroyo at Linsteadt Way, in front of Costco.
