San Jose, Calif.-The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is among 14 San Francisco Bay Area transit agencies slated to receive approximately $21 million to improve mass transit security. The funds come from Proposition 1B, approved by voters in November of 2006. VTA will join the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and other recipient agencies in announcing the funding on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at the Golden Gate Bridge.
VTA will be awarded $3,289,948 to enhance security, help reduce crime and provide a safer experience for passengers.
“Transit security has always been a top priority at VTA and this grant amount will be used for numerous projects, including emergency security telephones at light rail stations, laser intrusion detection systems, high security fencing and other technologies aimed at increasing the safety of our transit system,” explained VTA Board Chair Liz Kniss.
Proposition 1B enacted the Highway Safety, Traffic Reduction, Air Quality, and Port Security Bond Act of 2006; with $60 million appropriated in the current state budget for mass transit security. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security is charged with administering the Prop 1B funds that are set aside for transit security, safety and disaster response.
The announcement of the Prop 1B transit security funding will take place on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. at the Flag Pole area in the south east visitor area at the Golden Gate Bridge.
