VTAs Bus Line 88 Changes Service

Release Number:   nr07-04
Release Date:   July 7, 2008

San Jose, Calif. – In its ongoing effort to improve service and be more effective in meeting the community’s needs, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is modifying the route of its Community Bus Line 88 in Palo Alto.  The changes will add more frequency and service to the Midtown area and Louis Road.  In addition, the revised route will include service for several school commutes.

The changes to VTA’s Community Bus Line 88 are effective July 14, 2008, with school routes starting in the fall.   The modified bus line will provide service to Jordan Middle School, Terman Middle School and Gunn High School.  That service will coincide with the school bell times, with one morning and one afternoon trip to each school.  The modifications to Community Bus Line 88 provides for service every 30 minutes during peak hours on weekdays and every hour during the midday.  However, Community Bus Line 88 will no longer serve San Antonio Road.

A Palo Alto Community Transit Study prompted the modifications to Community Bus Line 88.  The Line 88 Timeguide is available online at www.vta.org.   For additional details about the service changes or a personalized trip plan, call VTA’s Customer Service line at (408) 321-2300, (TDD only) (408) 321-2330.  Information on the City of Palo Alto Shuttle schedules is available at www.cityofpaloalto.org/shuttle.

Background

Findings from a recently completed effort led by VTA in partnership with the City of Palo Alto, San Mateo County Transit District and Stanford University led to proposed changes to a network of community buses operating in the City.  The effort relied on an intensive level of public input and an unprecedented level of cooperation among the four operators providing bus service.   An innovative approach to understanding the travel market in Palo Alto helped all participants better meet the travel needs of transit riders and reduce automobile congestion.
